Medication Type Long Term Control 
Brand Names Singulair® 
Generic Names Montelukast sodium 
Description A tablet that decreases the swelling of airways by stopping the production of substances that cause swelling. 
Dosage Adults take 10mg in the evening. Exercise induced asthma, prophylaxis: 10 mg orally as a single dose at least 2 hours before exercise, no additional doses should be taken within 24 hours of previous dose.

Children 6-14 years old take 5mg chewable in the evening. Children 2-5 years old take 4mg chewable in the evening.

Also available in 4mg/packet granules. 
Precautions Montelukast is not meant for use as a quick-relief medication. When using with inhaled corticosteroids (such as budesonide, fluticasone, flunisolide), the dose of the steroid may be decreased, but montelukast should not be substituted for inhaled or oral steroids.  
Side Effects Headache, respiratory influenza. Pediatric patients 6-14 years old: diarrhea, sore throat, nausea, earache, sinusitis, and viral infection. Pediatric patients 2-5 years old: runny nose. 
Proper Use Take every day at the same time for best results. 
Common Interactions Phenobarbital and rifampin
